“The Constitution and Secession”
Thursday, April 9th is the 144th anniversary of General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. I was always told that Grant was a blacksmith and General Lee was just giving him his sword to polish. Whichever it was, The Circa History Guild has scheduled a truly unique program for that evening at 7:00. Professor Donald Livingston of Emory University will bring a program, the theme of which will answer the question of whether secession is Constitutional or not. He will compare The Articles of Confederation with the United States Constitution, and that document with The Constitution of the Confederate States of America. Dr. Livingston is renowned as a Constitutional scholar in the tradition of Thomas Jefferson, St. George Tucker, Robert Hayne, and John C. Calhoun. He is a founder of the Abbeville Institute “an association of scholars in higher education devoted to a critical study of what is true and valuable in the Southern tradition.” If you are tired of hearing all the Lincolnian claptrap about the American Union creating the states and want to hear a scholarly apologetic regarding the design of the Founders, join us for an evening of Southern fellowship and debate.
