On Thursday, April 1st at 7:00, in honor of Confederate History Month, historian Bill Potter will present a program at The Circa History Guild entitled “The City that Stood to the End: Mobile, Alabama, 1865.” The last great southern city to fall to Union attack in the Civil War was the Gulf port city of Mobile. Ringed with forts and entrenchments and a haven for blockade runners, Mobile and its defenders defied the blockade and attacking armies even after General Lee surrendered in Virginia. Bill has just returned from leading a tour of the fortifications of the city over which five different national flags have flown during its storied history.
The shelling of Ft. Sumter took place on April 12th, 1861. Mobile, Alabama surrendered on that day exactly four years later. Come and hear about the amazing battle of Mobile Bay where two famous admirals, both southerners but on opposite sides, fought it out at point blank range to determine the fate of one of the last major ports of the Confederacy.
